Play indications

leads:
  against NT contracts, "journalist" leads:
    Ace - Indicates at least A-K-J-x, A-K-Q-10-x, or A-K-10-9-x
requests that partner discard an honor if he has it (to allow
running the suit) or otherwise indicate length by discarding
a high card from a suit of even length or a low card from
          a suit of odd length
King - indicates A-K or K-Q and requests a return
Queen - indicates Q-J-10 or K-Q-10-9 requests that partner play
            jack if he holds it
Jack - denies higher honor and suggests this suit not be played
    Ten - guarantees the A, K or Q
9 - guarantees the ten, but no higher honors
other - tends to indicate it is the 4th highest card in the
            longest, strongest suit

  against suit contracts:
lead the lower of two touching honors

Discards:

NOTE: These indicate a higher probability that they mean what they say,
         not conclusive proof.

against a suit contract where lead is not trump:
    odd - return this suit
even - return the other non-trump suit
honors - return anything other than this suit

against a NT contract or when lead is trump:
    odd - return this suit
2,4 - return the next non-trump suit down in suit order
6,8 - return the next non-trump suit up in suit order
honors - return anything other than this suit

 in general:
playing a card followed in a later trick by a lower card
in the same suit indicates a desire to play that suit
